The Scenic Hudson Valley

One of the most beautiful areas of the country The Hudson Valley is only about one hour from the world center of business, culture, and recreation, New York City.

This proximity to the City makes the Hudson Valley one of the most desirable places in the world to live. There is affordable housing, the school systems are some of the best school programs in the country. The crime rate is low, and the transportation system is excellent.

Orange County is located in the lower Hudson Valley on the west side of the Hudson River. It is approximately 50 miles from New York City, and is bordered on the west by Pennsylvania and New Jersey to the south. It is about 816 square miles of which 18% is used for agriculture.

The average temperature in January, which is the coldest month, was 25.5. In July the warmest month it was 73.2. Rainfall throughout the year is about 42 inches and snowfall is about 43 inches.

Orange County was established in1683 as one of the original counties of the Province of New York, the name was taken from King William III, who was a Prince of the house of Orange.

The earliest human settlement in North America established by carbon dating over 12,000 years old was found in Orange County. In 1609 Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River, and anchored his ship the "Half Moon" in Cornwall Bay.

George Washington established his longest residency and did much of his planning during the Revolutionary War in Newburgh. It was also here where he founded the Order of the Purple Heart, and in 1850 his headquarters became the first Registered National Historic Landmark.

Transportation in the Orange County area is good as it is and moving along fast. If you're traveling by car, bus, train, or plane. Stewart International Airport is the first International Airport to become privatized leading to healthy competition for services. Orange County can be easily reached by the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) which is the major route from New York City to Albany. Interstate 84 runs from Pennsylvania through Orange County to the Newburg-Beacon Bridge. Route 17 starts at the Thruway and proceeds northwest through the county.

By bus the Shortline is the most active running from the Port Authority in Manhattan to many stops in Orange County including Montgomery, Middletown, Newburgh, Bear Mountain, and the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. The Mainline Trolley Bus makes stops in the local area. And Adirondack Trailways stops at Newburgh.

The Hudson Line of Metro North Commuter Lines runs from Grand Central Station which has been totally upgraded in terms of electronics and communications, along the Hudson River stopping at Newburg with shuttle service available. The Port Jervis line stops in Middletown.

Montgomery

The first settlers in Montgomery arrived in the early 1700's, The Native Americans that lived here were mostly peaceful. The first early settlers were Palatines from Germany, then came the Dutch, Scottish -Irish, and English. Many more Irish came in the mid 1800's and the Italians at the turn of the century.

Montgomery was originally called Wards Bridge named after a builder who constructed a bridge across the Wallkill River. The post office was opened even before Newburgh. The name was changed to Montgomery when soldiers returned from the Revolutionary War battlefields requesting a tribute to General Richard Montgomery, a gallant Irish-American who offered his life in the battle of Quebec, Canada.

Village of Montgomery

The Village of Montgomery is a rare spot in our geographical neighborhood. It was incorporated in 1810 and now has about 4000 residents. In many ways it is like traveling back in time to a much more serene and simple way of life. The houses and Churches are older and very well kept. Even the people themselves seem to rely on each other in a way that is not seen much in today's "get all you can for yourself "world.

There is a downtown business district, with many historic shops and fine eateries. Veterans Memorial Park has many activities for people of all ages including, baseball, basketball, a summer recreation program, and a recreation center. The basic feeling of the village is that of togetherness.

Village of Walden

In the year 2005, the quaint and historic village of Walden in the beautiful Wallkill Valley of Orange County, New York, celebrated its 150 years of incorporation.

Five miles as the crow flies to Montgomery, 6 miles from Maybrook, and 60 miles from New York City, Walden has a population of 11,481, enough of whom are committed to enhancing a rich and fulfilling quality of life while at the same time producing prosperity and financial growth, to make it one of the most attractive and go-ahead towns in New York State to live in.

Nearby State Parks provide some of the most beautiful camping and outdoor water and wilderness activities in the state, all within twenty miles. The Bear Mountain, Fahnestock, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harriman, Hudson Highlands, Margaret Lewis Horrie, Mahansic, Palisades Interstate, and Storm King State Parks, are to mention just a few.

Proud of it's own historic site, Walden House, which was built in the 1700's by the Dutch settler, Johannes Decker, and later owned by Jacob Treadwall Walden, after whom the town is now named, Walden residents have access to hundreds of museums, galleries, monuments and historic sites, many of which are within 20 miles in surrounding counties.

Village of Maybrook

Maybrook, one of 3 villages in Montgomery, is located in Orange County, with a population of 3,147. It is estimated that Maybrook's population grows at a rate of 9.2 percent per year. It is of note that crime is lower in Maybrook than the average in New York.

Maybrook is 51.8 miles from Newark, New Jersey, and 68.0 miles from New Haven, Connecticut. It's land area is1.3 square miles. Maybrook is off exit 5 of Interstate Route 84. Two miles south of the exit, you would take Route 208 south to Maybrook

The medium value of homes is about $100,000. The medium household income is $53,000. The medium age of residents is 33.

The Fox Hill Community

The Fox Hill Community is a Christian community within the town of Montgomery. It is comprised of 400 acres where the people live a simple communal life. They share all things in common as the early Christians did.

They come from varied backgrounds religious and non-religious but have a common belief in the teachings of Jesus, especially his teaching on forgiveness and non-violence, love of neighbors and faithfulness in marriage and that these values must be practiced in daily life.

Community Playthings, their oldest business, creates wooden classroom furniture for children's schools.

Middletown

Middletown's population is about 25,388 people. It is made up of a variety of ethnic groups and the Irish and the Italians were the first major immigrants.

The town has many forested areas and parks such as Minnewaska, Mohonk and Highland Lakes.

Randall airport is a small private airport that has balloon, gliding and ultra light rides and instruction. Greyhound Bus has a stop in Middletown, with destinations all over the country.

The Arts Council for Orange County is located in Middletown, and the Butcher's Guild Players Theater is also located there. The largest theatrical attraction in the area is the restored Paramount Theater with a variety of programs including classic, contemporary, popular, jazz, drama, dance, Broadway shows, comedy, opera, symphony, chamber music, variety acts, film, workshops and art exhibits. The Summer Star Theater also puts on a variety of different performances. Orange County Community College in Middletown is another venue for the arts with performances of classic, contemporary, popular, jazz, dramas and dance.

For the youngsters and the young at heart there is FunStation USA which has an indoor amusement park and roller rink. Also the Orange County Fair Speedway with dirt stock car racing. And of course for the shopping aficionado is the ultimate in shopping at the Galleria at Crystal Run with over 140 shops, restaurants, and theaters.

The town of Middletown has many historical buildings and homes; Mansion Hall of orange County Community College is an example of turn of the century architecture. The Edwin Willing Van Duzer Memorial House is another example, it has been turned into a museum of old Middletown. The Times Herald Record is one of the oldest newspapers in the Hudson Valley and you can enjoy a guided tour into journalism and its great tradition in America.

Middletown is also famous for its cigars; there are four different cigar shops there offering only the finest in handmade quality cigars.

Newburgh

The City of Newburgh is located on the banks of the Hudson River just north of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Newburgh is a diverse community that right now is in a new process of growth and development.

Its history is one filled with stories and events around the American Revolution. Of course it was General Washington's Headquarters in 1782 and 1783 and it was here that he learned of the successful negotiations with the British that brought an end to the American Revolution.

Today it has been kept as it was at that time that Washington lived and worked there and there are tours and special events throughout the year.

Newburgh's location makes it a perfect place for commerce, Stewart International Airport is very close by and the New York State Thruway going north to south and interstate 84 going east to west pass almost directly through the city. The fact that it is only 55 miles to New York City is another reason commerce can thrive so well there.

The City of Newburgh's waterfront view of the Hudson River is truly spectacular. The walk along Front Street with its shops and restaurants on a warm spring evening, while watching the boats on the Hudson, is one of the most relaxing forms of entertainment there is.
